Making your Will
A will defines what you want to happen to your property after your death. It can also help you to decide who you would like to deal with your affairs (executors) and what kind of funeral you would prefer.
Executors can be relatives, friends or where trusts are used it maybe best to use professional trustees through BTWC Ltd. When you decide who you would like to leave your property and money too, you should bear in mind anyone who is dependent on you and what you should do to protect them. All of us will be different, but some points to consider are:
- If you have no dependents - You may wish to split your estate to a friend, relative, charity or all three. If you decide on a split is is often best to do this in percentages, for example 20% to charity, 40% to firiend etc.
- If you are married - you may feel that you would like to leave everything to your husband or wife, knowing that they will be able to care for any other dependents - children or elderly or ill relatives. You should though also consider the position if something happened to you both - who should inherit then?
- If you are single, divorced or widowed - You may still wish to consider who is dependant on you and if it is children under the age of 18, you can decide who is to look after them until the age of 18 and who will look after their finances until such time (Trustees).
Once you have made these decisions, you will need to consider if there are any inheritance tax issues that you may wish to address.
